Promenades, a socio-political achievement of the upper middle-class, originally offered an antithesis to the grand gardens of the truly affluent. Strolling, leisure, and entertainment describe the event-type character in the sense of a jardin spectacle. As an urban space in which an informal encounter and contact between the members of an asymmetric society seems possible, promenades are a social ideal.
